? Who has access to the workshop for analogue photography ?
! The workshop is accessible for students of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, who have participated in a beginner’s course of the workshop and therefore have gained knowledge of darkroom work, processing methods and practice. This basic education qualifies the students to participate in advanced lectures and independent project work at the workshop. Students with existent practical experience in darkroom work (definition: the student is able to develop a film by her/him*self and has knowledge in analogue printing processes) can work independently in the workshop after having participated in a workshop introduction for students with existent analogue darkroom practice, which informs on the workshop modalities, safety rules and the technical equipment.
? Which facilities are available ?
! In the workshop for analogue photography we run all currently available processes from b/w to color and reversal development for all available film formats and the production of handprinted enlargments (prints). We also work and experiment with sustainable alternative developers based on plants and other natural resources in b/w, with cameraless, experimental or hybrid processes and techniques as well as with alternative processes or liquid emulsions and coating of 3-dimensional objects. Post-production applications like retouching, colouring, chemical toning and print mounting complement the range offered.
? How are the procedures to get an appointment to work ?
! Contact the workshop via email fotowerkstatt.analog@uni-ak.ac.at or phone +43 1 711332571 at least one week in advance and give a detailed description of the project you want to work on (film development or positive printing, which process, which technique, which material do you want to use, print size, number of prints, negative format, estimated work time etc.) so we are able to assign the right workstation.
? What is the code of conduct ?
! We prefer to work in a friendly and respectful environment. Reliability, commitment and punctuality are important keys towards a good collaboration. We give our best to provide workstations and ressources to all students in need, therefore we demand reliable communication and realistic plans for scheduling. Cancellations have to be announced 24hrs in advance so we can make it possible for colleagues to jump in. An appointment will be cancelled automatically if a student arrives more than 30 minutes late without further notice. Repeated delays may result in a temporary workshop restriction.
? Are materials supplied ?
! The workshop has a choice of different b/w and color papers in variable sizes in stock. Check beforehand if the amount needed for your project is available, especially when planning bigger projects like a diploma. Within a lecture materials like film and photopaper are provided by the workshop, for individual projects you can either bring your own photopaper or use the workshop’s material stock and reimburse the material costs when finished.
